Duplicate Content

Duplicate-content refers to blocks of text that appear in more than one place, confusing search engines and diluting SEO value.

It can exist within a single website (internal duplication) or across multiple domains (external duplication). Search engines struggle to determine which version to rank, which can lead to lower visibility or indexing issues.


Why Duplicate Content Is Bad for SEO:

  • HTTP vs. HTTPS / www vs. non-www – Treated as separate URLs without proper redirects.
  • Scraped or Syndicated Content – Republishing content from other sites without modification.
  • E-commerce Product Pages – Same descriptions used across multiple product listings or categories.

How to Fix Duplicate Content:

  • Use Canonical Tags – Indicate the preferred version of a page.
  • 301 Redirects – Redirect duplicate URLs to the original page.
  • Meta Robots “noindex” – Prevents indexing of duplicate pages.
  • Consistent Internal Linking – Always link to a single version of the page.
  • Rewrite Thin/Syndicated Pages – Add unique value or consolidate content.

Example:

If example.com/page1 and example.com/page1?ref=homepage both show the same content, that’s a duplicate unless handled properly with canonical or redirect tags.
